North Carolina official broke the sexuality barriers that are stereotypical of the American South. He accepted marriage licenses from twelve couples. The official, Drew Reisinger, began to question the validity of North Carolina's prohibition of same sex marriage. The couples he granted recognition had moved to the state of North Carolina after being married elsewhere. When he was questioned by the state's attorney general, Reisinger responded in defending homosexual marriage by claiming that the state had no right to strip away civil rights from a certain group of people.
