The Sagan Series - End of an Era

Do kids have to be taught about the supernatural?

One of the big questions about our supernatural instincts is to what degree they are innate, and to what degree they are learned. While there is some evidence that kids are born with a instinctive belief in omniscience beings, other evidence suggests the exact opposite.

Here's a new study by Ashley King, a grad student at the University of Arizona. She ran a group of 124 children aged 4-8 through a carefully designed study designed to see whether they understood what supernatural omniscience is.

--snip, snip--

So this supports the earlier studies by Jonathan Lane, which found that only older kids really get the idea of omniscience. Younger kids assume that supernatural beings have more ordinary mental capabilities.

In other words, it seems that this aspect, at least, of our beliefs about gods does not come naturally. It has to be learned.

OSU grads fight for troops' religious freedom

Two of the most-prominent national organizations fighting for religious freedom in the U.S. military have roots at Ohio State University. Retired Army Capt. Jason Torpy incorporated the nonprofit Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers while getting a master's in business administration at Ohio State in 2006. Air Force Reserve Capt. Casey Weinstein, whose experiences at the Air Force Academy helped lead his father to begin the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, also has an MBA from Ohio State. His wife, Reserve Capt. "Adam"-Telling God Goodbye

The Agnostic Pastor is honored to share the following 'letter', Telling God Goodbye, written by Adam.  Adam is a fellow member of The Clergy Project and fellow pastor who is in the closet.  Adam currently serves in the music ministry of a large church and is a gifted songwriter.

Adam was one of the original five pastors in the Dennett/LaScola study on Clergy who've lost their faith.  (http://www.epjournal.net/wp-content/uploads/EP08122150.pdf) Adam has also been a pivotal part of the design and launch of The Clergy Project support site for agnostic/atheist clergy.  His work with TCP has affected many pastors, like myself, offering a safe place for us to share with others walking the same path.

'Not a pretty scenario' in Iraq, analyst says

(CNN) -- A suicide car bomber targeting a Shiite funeral procession in Baghdad killed dozens Friday, the latest attack in a country engulfed by political crisis and an uptick in violence.

At least 31 people died and 60 others were wounded, two police officials said. The bombing occurred as mourners were heading toward a hospital in Baghdad's Zafarniya district to recover the bodies of relatives shot the night before, officials said.

The blast is the latest in a series of attacks, raising fears of a return to the sectarian violence of the previous decade when the Sunni-Shiite hostilities engulfed Iraq at the height of the war.

Alaska Airlines removing prayer cards from meal trays after 30 years as complaints increase

SEATTLE -- Alaska Airlines is ending decades of giving passengers prayer cards with their meals, saying Wednesday the decision was made out of respect for all passengers.

Airline spokeswoman Bobbie Egan said the airline heard from customers who preferred not to mix religion with transportation. The decision reflects respect for the diverse religious beliefs and cultural attitudes of Alaska Airlines’ customers and employees, the company said in announcing the change.

UTA, atheists battle over ads

Ads on buses and trains are seen by thousands of people a day. But the Utah Transit Authority tried to deny an open-records law request by an atheist group for a copy of all such ads accepted by the agency, arguing that might violate copyright laws.

But when the State Records Committee heard an appeal by the American Humanist Association, the AHA agreed to an offer by UTA to let it view the ads in its offices instead of providing copies. "It's not like those ads are secret. People see them on buses every day," said William Burgess, attorney for the AHA.

He said his group wants to see the ads because it questions whether UTA violated its own policies when it denied an ad proposed by the Utah Coalition of Reason that would have said, "Don't believe in God? You're not alone," and listed its Web page.

If Minnesota atheists believe in anything, it's smiling babies

Minnesota atheists are using an image of a cute baby - in an imitation of an anti-abortion billboard campaign - for its new billboards in the Twin Cities promoting godlessness.

"We are all born without belief in gods. Learn how to be a born-again atheist," reads the billboard near the corner of University and Lexington avenues in St. Paul.

"Please don't indoctrinate me with religion. Teach me to think for myself," reads the billboard at 725 Washington Ave. N. in Minneapolis.

Both feature the picture of a smiling baby.

Science TV "network decay"

It happens with disgusting regularity. You will flip through the various basic cable channels which are nominally "science oriented" (often grouped together on the dial if they feature scientific topics) and come up with nothing but junk, pseudoscience, and worse. "Reality shows" about subjects with little or no science content, tons of paranormal and pseudoscientific shows promoting ghosts, UFOs, Bigfoot, and creationism--all fill the airwaves for channels like Discovery, The  Learning Channel, History Channel, and even the Science Channel and National Geographic Channel. We watch a few minutes of these with complaints to anyone within earshot, then (usually) move on--or occasionally we get sucked in to watch the whole thing, like gawkers at a car crash. The cartoon at the top (from the great website PhdComics) says it all: four channels that used to be largely documentaries on science and history are now dominated  by guns, explosions, dangerous occupations and other "reality" TV. Their shows have  buzz words in the titles like "biggest", "wildest", "monsters" or "killers", and plain old junk fill up most of their air time.

Cohabitating Valentines Are Happier Than Wedded Couples

"We found that differences between marriage and cohabitation tend to be small and dissipate after a honeymoon period. Also while married couples experienced health gains -- likely linked to the formal benefits of marriage such as shared health care plans -- cohabiting couples experienced greater gains in happiness and self-esteem. For some, cohabitation may come with fewer unwanted obligations than marriage and allow for more flexibility, autonomy and personal growth," said Kelly Musick, associate professor of policy analysis and management at Cornell's College of Human Ecology, who co-authored the study with sociologist Larry Bumpass of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

How Longstanding Conflict Influences Empathy for Others

In a study published Dec. 1 in Neuropsychologia, Saxe and Bruneau scanned people's brains as they read stories in which the protagonist experienced either physical or emotional pain. The brain regions that responded uniquely to emotional suffering overlapped with areas known to be involved in the ability to perceive what another person is thinking or feeling.

Hoping to see a correlation between empathy levels and amount of activity in those brain regions, the researchers then recruited Israelis and Arabs for a study in which subjects read stories about the suffering of members of their own groups or that of conflict-group members. The study participants also read stories about a distant, neutral group -- South Americans.

As expected, Israelis and Arabs reported feeling much more compassion in response to the suffering of their own group members than that of members of the conflict group. However, the brain scans revealed something surprising: Brain activity in the areas that respond to emotional pain was identical when reading about suffering by one's own group or the conflict group. Also, those activity levels were lower when Arabs or Israelis read about the suffering of South Americans, even though Arabs and Israelis expressed more compassion for South Americans' suffering than for that of the conflict group.

Are Religious People Better Adjusted Psychologically?

On average, believers only got the psychological benefits of being religious if they lived in a country that values religiosity. In countries where most people aren't religious, religious people didn't have higher self-esteem. "We think you only pat yourself on the back for being religious if you live in a social system that values religiosity," Gebauer says. So a very religious person might have high social self esteem in religious Poland, but not in non-religious Sweden.

We Are Atheism Campaign Continues to Grow

The We Are Atheism campaign started last summer shows no signs of losing steam.

Centered on a website where atheists are encouraged to openly share their stories through videos and essays, Amanda and Adam Brown have seen their project continue to garner support since its August 2011 launch. In less than six months, the site has had 85,000 visitors from 151 countries, according to Amanda, and she continues to get daily submissions of both essays and videos in their effort to let other atheists know "there are other people out there that are nonbelievers just like them."

"It's okay to be an atheist" is a slogan used on the website. "We want the world to know we exist and we will not be ignored," the About Us page adds. "We will stand up, speak out, and be counted."

When It Comes to Accepting Evolution, Gut Feelings Trump Facts

ScienceDaily -- For students to accept the theory of evolution, an intuitive "gut feeling" may be just as important as understanding the facts, according to a new study.

--snip--

Haury and his colleagues tapped into cognitive science research showing that our brains don't just process ideas logically -- we also rely on how true something feels when judging an idea. "Research in neuroscience has shown that when there's a conflict between facts and feeling in the brain, feeling wins," he says.

Asia braces for Year of Dragon baby boom

This Monday marks the beginning of the Year of the Dragon. In Chinese culture, babies born this iteration of the 12-year Zodiac cycle - which alternates between other animals like rats, horses, and goats - are gifted with prodigious quantities of luck and strength. In ancient times the dragon was a symbol reserved for the Chinese emperor, and it is considered to be an extremely auspicious sign.

Gunmen killed local Iraqi leader, his 3 sons

Council members have become targets for jihadists.

Over the past two weeks, hundreds of Iraqis have been killed and wounded in violence across the country, raising concerns about the ability of security forces to do their job.

Despite a decrease in overall violence in Iraq, it still touches Iraqis almost every day. Ordinary Iraqis say the violence is largely sectarian, with the once-dominant Sunni Muslims believing Shiites are responsible, and the majority Shiites blaming Sunni insurgents.

High court rejects appeals on public prayers, student speech

Washington (CNN) -- The Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected an appeal from a North Carolina county that had regularly opened its public meetings with Christian prayers.

The church-state dispute is a victory for two Forsyth County residents who brought suit against the Board of Commissioners. Janet Joyner and Constance Lynn Blackmon were represented in their court challenge by the American Civil Liberties Union and Americans United for Separation of Church and State.

"When government meetings are opened regularly with Christian prayer, it sends the unmistakable message that non-Christians are second-class citizens in their own community," said the Rev. Barry Lynn, who heads Americans United, a Washington-based group. "The Constitution clearly forbids government to play favorites when it comes to religion."

Court records show that 26 of 33 invocations given at the council meetings in 2007 and 2008 contained references to Jesus Christ, the Trinity, or other Christian symbols or names. Clergy members from the community often delivered the sectarian invocations. The county seat is Winston-Salem, one the largest cities in the state.

A federal appeals court last year found the prayers to be an unconstitutional violation of the Constitution's Establishment Clause, which forbids any government endorsement of one religion over another.

The case is Forsyth County, N.C., v. Joyner (11-546).

People Behave Socially and 'Well' Even Without Rules

ScienceDaily -- Millions of human interactions were assessed during the study which included actions such as communication, founding and ending friendships, trading goods, sleeping, moving, however also starting hostilities, attacks and punishment. The game does not suggest any rules and everyone can live with their avatar (i.e. with their "game character" in the virtual world) as they choose. "And the result of this is not anarchy," says Thurner. "The participants organise themselves as a social group with good intents. Almost all the actions are positive."

Deep thinkers list science's 'most beautiful theories'

NEW YORK -- From Darwinian evolution to the idea that personality is largely shaped by chance, the favorite theories of the world's most eminent thinkers are as eclectic as science itself.

Every January, John Brockman, the impresario and literary agent who presides over the online salon Edge.org, asks his circle of scientists, digerati and humanities scholars to tackle one question.

In previous years, they have included "How is the Internet changing the way you think?" and "What is the most important invention in the last 2,000 years?"

This year, he posed the open-ended question "What is your favorite deep, elegant or beautiful explanation?"

Israelis Facing a Seismic Rift Over Role of Women

The list of controversies grows weekly: Organizers of a conference last week on women's health and Jewish law barred women from speaking from the podium, leading at least eight speakers to cancel; ultra-Orthodox men spit on an 8-year-old girl whom they deemed immodestly dressed; the chief rabbi of the air force resigned his post because the army declined to excuse ultra-Orthodox soldiers from attending events where female singers perform; protesters depicted the Jerusalem police commander as Hitler on posters because he instructed public bus lines with mixed-sex seating to drive through ultra-Orthodox neighborhoods; vandals blacked out women’s faces on Jerusalem billboards.

Public discourse in Israel is suddenly dominated by a new, high-toned Hebrew phrase, "hadarat nashim," or the exclusion of women. The term is everywhere in recent weeks, rather like the way the phrase "male chauvinism" emerged decades ago in the United States.
