Christians debate atheists in Beaverton-based Westside Science and Religion Discussion Group

HILLSBORO -- In a normally quiet alcove in the Hillsboro Main Library, a man and woman fight over the Bible, arguing about evolution, Leviticus, the great flood and whether spanking amounts to child abuse.

They are here for the monthly Christians versus atheists debate -- though they are not the debaters, but audience members awaiting the night's discussion. Their spirited exchange is very much in keeping with what organizer Bernie Dehler, a Christian-turned-atheist, was after when he created the Westside Science and Religion Discussion Group.

Dehler said he hoped to spark conversations between people of different faiths and "to help make it acceptable in society to talk about religion-and-science-conflict issues and not demonize each other."
